The archaeological researches show that by the mineral springs of Hissar there has been a village 5000 B.C. Many years later Thracians and Romans settled around the hot mineral springs. In the year of 293 the Roman emperor Diocletian visited the village and surrounded it with a fortress wall. Then the village got the name Dioclatianopolis.
